use a USB webcam with MegaWave2
This installation worked fine for a PCVC680K Vesta Pro
on a Inspiron 7000 with Linux Mandrake 7.1.
It is not guaranteed to work, even if your configuration
is (apparently) the same. In case of any doubt, please first
consult the following site
http://www.smcc.demon.nl/webcam/ (Linux support for Philips USB webcams)
from which all this is inspired.
To install first (as root)
- install 2.2.16 kernel
- get the kernel (here is
kernel-2.2.16-9mdk.i586.rpm for Mandrake)
- rpm -U kernel-2.2.16-9mdk.i586.rpm
- then edit your /etc/lilo.conf (or equivalent) and launch lilo
- reboot under the new kernel
- install webcam specific module :
To launch at boot (as root)
insmod -f /lib/modules/2.2.16-9mdk/misc/usb-pwc-5.04-p6-up.o
To use the webcam
Simply compile and launch the MegaWave2 module
You can also get the
The interface with the webcam is simple: a open() call on
/dev/video to open the port, then ioctl() calls to read/change
parameters (image size, frame rate, color encoding, ...) and
read() calls to read the current image. All this should appear
clearly in the source of camview.c
